Our AchievementsThe work of Stockport Economic Alliance has been central to a significant number of achievements and developments, to the benefit of businesses and residents alike.
The list below provides an overview of achievements linked to the Economic Development Strategy between April 2013 and December 2015:
- Inward Investment
Between 2013 and 2015, over £22.1 million of investment by the private sector was identified in the borough, creating over 4,000 new jobs and safeguarding a further 2,000 as existing businesses expanded and new businesses relocated into the area.
- Digital Connectivity
£15m Get Digital Faster programme launched to bring fibre connectivity to areas of Greater Manchester. The Programme is in the process of installing 78 new fibre enabled cabinets across the borough and by March 2017 will have increased coverage of superfast broadband from 96.5% of premises across Stockport to 99.3%.
The Superconnected Cities programme, available during 2015, enabled over 340 Stockport based businesses to access over £100,000 of grant funding, connecting them to superfast broadband using BDUK’s government funded broadband vouchers.
- Stockport Sustainable Challenge Fund
The SEA oversaw a funding competition aimed at supporting the installation of environmentally friendly technology within Stockport’s businesses. Grants of between £3,000 and £10,000 were made available to six competition winners, providing up to 50% of the cost of purchasing and installing technology that will reduce their impact on the environment whilst delivering real economic benefits.
- Meet the Buyer
In 2015 Over 150 businesses participated in the Meet the Buyer event, attending 200 appointments with 9 purchasing teams. Meet the Buyer gives Stockport-based companies the chance to promote their goods and services to buyers acting on behalf of some of the borough’s leading businesses and largest public sector organisations. The event has so far enabled around 3,000 appointments to be held since the SEA’s Meet the Buyer in 2008.
- Stockport Business and Innovation Centre
Investment at Stockport Business and Innovation Centre since 2013 has enabled the centre to grow from strength to strength. Supported by many SEA members, the centre holds an annual business competition and is the venue for numerous business events and workshops. The centre offers many benefits to its tenants, including business lounge, superfast broadband, inclusive packages and a strong support network.
- We Are Stockport
Encouraged by the SEA, the “We are Stockport” web site launched in 2015, providing a single location to promote all that is taking place across the Borough; the great news, events, places to go, things to see and people who make a difference to the place we live in!
- Stockport Exchange
Phase 1 of Stockport Exchange redevelopment was completed in 2014. Phase Two of the development began on site in August 2015 and will be completed by late 2016 bringing with it the development of 43,000 sq ft of office accommodation, a 115 bed town centre hotel and public realm improvements.
- A6 to Manchester Airport Relief Road
A6 to Manchester Airport Relief Road started on site February 2015 and it is anticipated that it will be open to traffic by autumn 2017. The scheme will create a new 2-lane dual carriageway on an east-west route from the A6 near Hazel Grove via the 4 kilometres of existing A555 to Manchester Airport and the link road to the M56.
- Redrock Stockport
Work began in 2015 on the 75,000 sq ft leisure and retail development in the heart of Stockport Town Centre and it is expected to be completed by 2017. Redrock Stockport will contain a new cinema, car park and restaurants.
- Town Centre Access Plan
Work began in 2015 on the Town Centre Access Plan which considers access by all methods of travel and specifically aims to ease congestion for buses and general road traffic and encourage walking and cycling, as part of an ambitious vision and development framework for investment in the town centre.
- Aurora Stockport
During 2016, the 18 acre site formerly known as Gorsey Bank, close to Junction1 of the M60, will be developed into 145,000 sqft of light industrial units providing an impressive new employment site called Aurora Stockport.
- Jobs with Training
Jobs with Training programme launched in Stockport in 2014, offering wage incentives to companies employing unemployed 18 -24 year olds.
Gander has been set up to bring business and education together, building mutually beneficial relationships for the future. It enables students to sample the experience of a whole range of employers, and at the same time we work to match supportive companies with colleges and students that meet their specific business needs.
- Working Well
Since its launch in 2014, the Working Well pilot in Stockport provided targeted support to over 200 individuals, transforming the lives of those who had not been able to find sustainable employment.
