Stockport's Achievements

Stockport Economic Alliance oversees the Economic Development Strategy and is proud to acknowledge achievements made by a range of partner organisations, to the benefit of both the businesses and residents of Stockport.

The list below provides an overview of some of the achievements since January 2020:

  • Stockport Business Summit

The Stockport Business Summit, held in March 2020, focused on the way in which digital technology is transforming the economy. 

  • One Stockport

Launch of the One Stockport brand promoting a better future for everyone through supporting the local economy, connecting communities and promoting health and wellbeing. 

  • SK Business Recovery

Launch of the SK Business Recovery website to provide advice, support and guidance to businesses through the coronavirus pandemic. 

  • Stockport Jobs Match

Launch of the Jobs Match service that was set up to bring together businesses looking for more staff and people who were looking for work during the Coronavirus outbreak and is now continuing to develop into a valuable resource for jobs, training and career advice. 

  • Stockport Exchange

2 Stockport Exchange opened with Global chemical company, BASF taking 21,500 sq ft as the base for its UK headquarters. Planning permission for the next phase of the development was approved in October 2021. 

  • Transport Interchange

Funding secured and work started onsite for a new Transport Interchange featuring a brand new two-acre park, around 200 new high quality apartments; state-of the-art transport facilities and improved links between the interchange and rail station. 

  • Weir Mill

Planning application approved in October 21 for the regeneration of Weir Mill to create a new riverside community in Stockport Town Centre. 

  • Underbanks

Public realm improvements carried out to the Underbanks as part of the Town Centre Access Plan in support of the ‘Rediscovering the Underbanks’ project. 

  • Digital Infrastructure

Over £1.6m of investment for Stockport from the Local Full Fibre Network Programme enabling new fibre infrastructure to be installed, supporting 136 public premises including libraries, schools, community centres & museums. 

  • Future High Streets Funding

£14.5m of funding secured from the Government’s Future High Streets Fund to create a 21st Century, universal learning and discovery space. 

  • Cheadle Towns Fund

£13.9 m of funding secured from the Government’s Towns Fund for a package of projects promoting connectivity, clean growth and economic recovery. 

  • Gigantic Leap Frog Trail

Launch of the Gigantic Leap Frog Art Trail in summer 2021 with 21 gigantic colourful frogs in the town centre and a further 17 across the borough attracting visitors, residents, and families of all ages. 

  • Town Centre events

Stockport Food Festival returned in September 2021 offering a wide range of stalls, presentations and activities; Mount Recyclemore was hosted at Stockport Exchange through the summer months and Stockport Enduro cycling festival took place in September. 

  • Business Support

Covid related support grants totalling over £110 million issued to 6,500 businesses in Stockport during 2020 and 21, to support and sustain their ongoing survival.
